Egg carton duck

Thursday, March 28th, 2013

Kids can make a chick or a duck (I think my example is a hybrid) using a section of an egg carton and other random craft supplies. It’s great for Easter, and you can recycle those old cartons!

What You Need: Cardboard egg carton, scissors (strong ones for adult to cut apart carton), safety scissors, craft foam, googly eyes, feathers, paint, paint brush, glue, tape.

How to Make It: Paint egg carton and let dry. Then let kids go wild cutting out and attaching features. They could make a bunny, too!

Easter toy capsule craft

Thursday, March 28th, 2013

Save the plastic capsules from those gumball machine toys. They’re great for crafts such as these cute toy capsules. You can fill them with candy or just stuff them with cotton or crumpled tissue paper.

What You Need: Toy capsule, cotton balls or batting, candy, felt or construction paper or craft foam, pom poms, googly eyes, scissors, glue or adhesive “glue dots.”

How to Make It: Stick cotton or candy (but not cotton candy) inside capsule and secure lid. Kids can then creatively decorate them using supplies you set out. Glue takes awhile to set on slick plastic; I used sticky glue dots instead.

Paper Plate Dreamcatcher

Sunday, March 3rd, 2013

Combine this fun project of making a dreamcatcher with a lesson on Native American culture. Kids can hang this dream catcher over their bed. Be sure to set out plenty of different yarns, beads, feathers and markers so children will have creative choices.

What You Need: 1 white paper plate, yarn, feathers, beads, hole punch, scissors.

How to Make It: Cut out center of paper plate and recycle or set aside for another project. Draw on plate with markers. Use hole punch to punch 10 to 12 holes about half an inch from the outer edge of the plate. Weave yarn through the holes so it forms a web pattern. String some beads as you are weaving. Cut three smaller lengths of yarn, string beads on them, and tie a feather to the end of each one. Tie each of these to the bottom of the plate. Tie another piece of yarn at the top of the dreamcatcher to hang it. Younger children may need help with scissors and knot-tying.

Butterfly TP tube craft

Butterfly TP tube craft

This pink and red butterfly is a fun Valentine’s Day craft for preschoolers. They’ll love decorating the wings. You can give them a head-start by cutting out the wings ahead of time.

What You Need: 1 toilet paper tube; red and pink construction paper or cardstock (I used cardstock); 1 white pipe cleaner; 2 googly eyes; foam hearts; scissors; glue; black marker; pencil; tape.

How to Make It: Fold red cardstock in half and draw half of a wing shape. Cut and open to reveal wings. Cut pink cardstock the length and width of a toilet paper tube and adhere around the tube using glue or tape. Adult should cut pipe cleaner in half and help child roll ends around a pencil for curly antennae. Tape inside toilet paper tube body. Glue on eyes and draw mouth. Glue or tape wings to back of body and decorate with foam hearts, markers, or any way you’d like.

Egg carton spider

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

Great for Halloween or a spider unit in school, these spiders are quick and fun to make. If you want, you can twist one of the pipe cleaner legs to make the spider “hold” a name to identify a child’s desk or as a placecard at a Halloween party.

What You Need: 1 “cup” section from egg carton; black tempera paint; 2 black pipe cleaners; 2 googly eyes; paintbrush; glue; 1/8″ hole punch or poking tool.
How You Make It: Adults should precut egg carton and pipe cleaners and poke the leg holes for littler kids. Paint egg carton section black and let dry. Poke or punch four holes on each of two sides of the egg carton cup. Cut each pipe cleaner in half, poke in one hole and out the opposite side and bend into leg shapes. Use glue to add googly eyes.
